UNDERSTANDING BACK in o u r knickerbocker
IS INGREDIENT '-'years, some of us became enTO ACCEPTANCE slaved by a type of lingual
stultiloquy we called "pig latin", which set up an artificial caste system of
those who could understand and those who couldn't. However, there came a time when the secret
had so thoroly leaked that only a few showoffs
continued to indulge in this false speech impediment.

We were reminded of this the other day when,
in a current piece of Scientology propaganda,
L. Ron Hubbard makes the statement that today's
processing is "crazy simple". We'll agree it's
crazy, all right, but can see nothing simple
in the several pages of "itsa", "R3R", "T A",
"PTPs" jabberwocky used to show how "simple"
Scientology is not. Like medicine, with its
camouflaging Latin nomenclature, Scientology
has built a"Keep Out" fence with such childish
tricks of neology. Instead of attracting
pilgrims to its cause, it has said in so many
(not understandable) words that this is a "science" of "Me onlys" -- and as a result, has left
itself wide open to attack and censure, such
as that from Melbourne. What one cannot understand one normally fears. And what one fears,
he seeks to destroy, or render harmless by
placing it out of reach.

WHEN Dianetics first came out in 1949-1950,
much of its magnetism was due to its author's ability to express himself in language
that was clear and meaningful. Thousands flocked
to read the book and give it a trial. Other
large numbers even coughed up huge sums to
attend special classes where they were told
they could become the leaders of the new world
that Dianetics was about to offer mankind.

But the "simplicity" of Dianetics was short
lived. In a few months, Scientology came into
the picture, and interest dwindled as words
like "thetan", "entheta", "ARC", "MEST", etc.,
became a part of the students' jargon. Instead
of building a better bridge, Scientology began
to build an unabridged dictionary of confused
nomenclature for the few linguists with stamina and money to stay with it. And now, it's
all labeled so "crazy simple". The writer of
science fiction in the 194O's is still writing
fiction science in the 1960's.

It reminds us of the school teacher, who,
told by her physician that she was suffering
from 4hilogroggenitiveness, began wasting away
until she ended up in a sanatorium, condemned
to an early death by a thoughtless, conceited
medico who was trying to impress his patient
with his heterogeneity. Had the teacher bothered to consult a dictionary, she would have
discovered she was suffering from nothing more
serious than a love of children.

There are those who say many of the world's
ills could be cured were all nations to adopt
a universal language for greater understanding. But, unfortunately, there are those who
cannot learn to utilize the languages we have.
And more unfortunately, it is those who should
know better -- EX-writers, way-showers, bridge
builders -- who seem to want to do most to break
down any semblance of world unity by splitting
up even those who are supposed to enjoy the
understanding of a common language.
